Recovered Fragment: Condensation

I'm not sure how long it had been going on before I noticed it.

Every morning when I made coffee, there was something written in the condensation of the kitchen window.

It was written from the inside.

First, it said, "HI."

I wiped it away. I checked all the rooms in my house, since I lived alone. There were no signs of anyone having been in there.

The next day, it said, "I'M NOT HERE TO SCARE YOU. SORRY."

I wiped it away, dropping the towel in the sink.

I installed security cameras throughout the house, and one that sat on the fridge, pointed directly at the window.

The next morning, I watched the footage. Nothing appeared in the kitchen.

At 5:04 am, the window was blank. In the next frame, there was writing. I could not tell what it said from the video.

I went downstairs and ran to the window.

It simply said, "<3."

I put my hand to my mouth and stared at it for a long time.

I didn't wipe the condensation away this time. I drew a heart beside it.

The next morning, there were two hearts, "<3 <3."

Every morning, there was something in the window. I didn't realize how much I looked forward to seeing the messages until the warm seasons came.

As the mornings grew warmer, there was less condensation and only partial messages.

"GOOD M..."

"SEE YO..."

"HAPPY..."

Soon, there was nothing.

I watched for when the first condensation came during fall.

I wrote "HI."

The next day, I rushed down the stairs. A tear formed when I saw it.

"YOU CAME BACK."
